Portraits of celebrities today are highly orchestrated affairs, a masterminded product of public-relations teams, stylists, and photo editors hired to make a star appear just so. Yet, for Life and The New York Times photographer Henri Dauman, the celebrity portrait was once a chance to unearth the eccentricity and originality behind a star’s public façade. Armed with a Leica, a 35-mm Nikon, and his undisputable French charm, Dauman captured stars of the 50s and 60s by building an intimate rapport with his subjects. “The picture,” said Dauman, “is as good as [your ability to] bring your subject to discuss themselves openly with you.”

The results? Stunning photographs, cinematically posed or á la sauvette, of some of the most elusive stars of the era—Lauren Bacall, Elvis Presley, Brigitte Bardot, and even a young Morgan Freeman. All are part of “The Manhattan Darkroom,” a new exhibit honoring Dauman’s work at the Palais d’Iéna, in Paris, on view until December 4. Take a look here, or better yet, hop on the next flight to the City of Light.
